How to Know You Need a New AC

It’s easy to save for planned expenditures. A new car. A new house in Dumas, Texas. College education. As long as you put a portion of your money toward these future expenses, you find a sense of security. However, not every expense is planned, and the surprise expenditures are often the ones that hit us the hardest.

But how can you possibly prepare for something you don’t know is coming? By looking for the signs of a slowly failing air conditioner, you can plan for what would otherwise be an expensive surprise expenditure. Here’s how to know you need a new AC.

Efficiency

One of the easiest ways to tell if your AC is on its last legs is to pay attention to its performance. Do you feel like your home is warmer and maybe muggier than it’s been in the past, despite your thermostat remaining at the same setting? If so, it’s likely a sign that strain and age are finally getting the best of your unit and it just can’t maintain efficient comfort like it used to.

Age

When you drive a car that’s over 20 years old, you know it’s a miracle (and a result of good care, probably) that the engine even turns over. Things just don’t last forever, and neither does your AC unit. Even with regular maintenance and efficient heating and cooling habits, an air conditioner will probably last about 10 to 15 years.

Indoor Air Quality

In addition to keeping your home cool, your AC unit and the rest of your HVAC system work to keep your home healthy. If you’ve changed the filters regularly and still notice extra dust and dirt around your home, it’s likely a sign your AC can’t clean your air like it used to, which also points to other potential issues with the system.

Be prepared for the day when you come home and your air conditioner is finally finished, or better yet, don’t wait for it to quit. If you notice these signs, call us and schedule a new AC installation so you have peace of mind that you and your family will continue to stay comfortable throughout this summer and for summers to come.
