History

Founded during the first decade of the 20th century, Dalhart has always been a key economic center for northwestern Texas. Although it was initially conceived as a railroad depot, it quickly grew into an agricultural hub for the surrounding wheat fields. Despite easy access to the Ogallala Aquifer, Dalhart suffered mightily during the prolonged drought known as the Dust Bowl. After this trying period, more rain combined with better farming techniques improved the conditions for local farmers. These days, Dalhart has a diverse economy that’s closely tied to the area’s natural bounty.

Geography

Asthe name suggests, Dalhart is located on the border of Dallam and Hartley Counties. It’s the northernmost trade center in the Texas Panhandle and has the unusual distinction of being closer to the state capitals of Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico than to the capital of Texas. Although it’s not technically part of the flat, treeless Llano Estacado, Dalhart sits on a broad area of flat or gently sloping land that’s too arid to support tree cover outside of sheltered river valleys. Although the mountains aren’t visible from ground level, it’s just 100 miles from the foothills of the Rockies.

Population and Demographics

Dalhart’s population has grown slowly but steadily since 1990. The headcount is currently between 8,000 and 8,500, but many more people live in the rural areas and villages in the surrounding lands. As a trade center for a wide swathe of northwestern Texas, Dalhart has a fairly diverse economy that maintains deep roots in agriculture and mineral extraction. With several scenic areas nearby, the area is also a surprisingly robust tourist destination. However, Dalhart’s geographical isolation makes it challenging to attract firms in fast-growing sectors like IT and high-tech manufacturing.

Things to Do in Dalhart, Texas

Dalhart has plenty of impressive attractions. The Hilmar Cheese Company’s local factory celebrates the area’s ranching heritage and delights visiting schoolchildren. Along with the annual XIT Rodeo and Reunion, the XIT Museum looks at the history and infrastructure of one of the largest ranches in the world. Dalhart also plays host to the Muscle Car Party, the largest classic car show in northwestern Texas. To the north, Rita Blanca National Grassland encompasses thousands of acres of waving prairie grasses. Local boaters enjoy the spacious confines of Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.

Climate and Weather

Dalhart has a semi-arid climate that’s typical of the High Plains region of the United States. Due to its relatively high elevation and northwesterly location within the state, Dalhart is one of the coldest populated places in Texas. During the winter, cold winds blow from the northwest and bring occasional bouts of wind-driven snow and ice. On the other hand, down sloping Chinook winds can produce rapid warm-ups at any time of year. Whereas spring and fall tend to be a bit wetter and stormier than other times of year, summer is usually hot and dry.
