As the Texas Panhandle was developed in the late 1800s, Dumas was named after its founder, Louis Dumas. Although Dumas didn’t stay in the area very long, the community continued to develop. The song writer and composer, Phil Baxter, visited the area in the 1920s, and within the year, he released a song titled “I’m a Ding Dong Daddy from Dumas, providing the small town with national recognition.
Dumas is located in the Texas Panhandle, the northernmost portion of the state. The city covers an area of 5.52 square miles of which approximately 0.34 percent is water. The city is located 47 miles north of Amarillo. The largest nearby body of water is Lake Meredith, approximately 43 miles in driving distance.
According to 2010 U.S. Census results, Dumas had a population of 14,691. Approximately 31.4 percent of residents are children, and 10.6 percent of residents exceed the age of 65. Of those residents over the age of 25, 72.1 percent hold high school diplomas and 14.6 percent hold bachelor’s degrees or higher. The homeownership rate in the community is 71.2 percent, and the median household income is $50,172.
